Distribution: Widely distributed east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to the Rocky Mountains and northern Great Plains.

Habitat: Open, dry, rocky areas at low elevations.

Flowers: March-May

Origin: Native

Description:
General:

Puberulent perennial from a taproot and simple, subterranean crown, 1-3 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves gray-green, basal, ternate-pinnately or merely pinnately dissected into segments up to 9 mm. long and 2 mm. wide. Taproot strongly thickened throughout, or slender above, elongate-tuberous below.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a compound umbel, the rays 2-6 cm. long at maturity; peduncles usually several from the base, ascending in flower and upright in fruit, 1-2.5 dm. long; involucre none; involucel of narrow, conspicuous, green bractlets, often surpassing the flowers; calyx teeth obsolete; flowers grayish-white or purplish-white, rarely yellowish; pedicels 1-11 mm. long.

Fruits:

Fruit narrow, oblong, 10-20 mm. long, glabrous to puberulent, the marginal wings narrow to fairly broad.
